Birmingham International Dance Festival is excited to offer two commissions for new site sensitive works as part of its performance programme at Victoria Square in June 2018.
The commissions will be presented within Midlands Made, a new initiative with the support of Dance Hub to support the development and visibility of innovative, regional work that pushes the boundaries of contemporary choreographic practice.
This callout is addressed to professional artists who create the majority of their work in the Midlands. The new work should emanate from Birmingham, resonate and celebrate the city and respond to the location of Victoria Square or its surroundings. We are particularly interested in current choreographic work that challenges the nature of form and we welcome cross-disciplinary works or collaborations. Ideally, the project will be adaptable for touring elsewhere.
We encourage the work to be reflective of one or more of the festival’s themes: celebrating the diversity of identities and bodies, working with digital art, mindfulness and challenging traditions.
The commissions will be provided with a budget of £2,000-£4,500. We are happy to offer up to 15 days of free studio space for rehearsals at DanceXchange.
