Foreign Bodies: An underwater love story

Ella Mesma as part of Festival of Audacity

Foreign Bodies: An underwater love story is supported by DanceXchange as part of Festival of Audacity

Inspired by the British citizenship test, Ella will be presenting extracts from Foreign Bodies, a dance piece which crosses borders and oceans to look at fear versus love. Jellyfish, medical understandings of disease, and media references around migration are used to take a funny, frank look at what it means to be a citizen of the world. Danced to Fado, Kizomba and Kuduro rhythms created by composer Sabio Janiak.

Ella Mesma began her dance career with Afro Latin styles and breakdance before training at The Place. The collective Ella Mesma Company have been commissioned by Sadler’s Wells (‘Wild Card’), Dance City (as Associate Dance Artist 2016-2017), and the National Circus Centre (‘Papyllon’).

Ella Mesma Company will be performing as part of Festival of Audacity on Friday 19 & Saturday 20 July at Birmingham New Street Station / 2pm and Rotunda Square, Bullring / 4.30pm

Free Radical presents Festival of Audacity: a multidisciplinary festival of activist art making all of Birmingham its stage from 18-20 July. FOA empowers young artists by making space for them to take risks and enables people to experience new art in unexpected places. By opening the city up, this Festival makes Birmingham its stage.
