The 5 Man Show

The return of the critically acclaimed and hugely successful contemporary dance production

In 2006, DanceXchange presented The 5 Man Show. This highly popular all male dance show, originally staged in-the-round, sold out nationally and internationally, and is being revived for a Spring tour in 2013 redesigned for a traditional theatre format.

Three internationally renowned choreographers and 5 superb dancers will unite to showcase the very best of contemporary dance, in an unmissable entertaining dance event ranging from burlesque to pure dance to dance theatre.

The 5 Man Show presents three innovative and dynamic pieces of dance by Arthur Pita, David Massingham (Artistic Director) and Liam Steel (Stan Wont Dance). The programme duration is 85 minutes including one 20 minute interval. With simple staging and sophisticated lighting, the choreographers have focused purely on the nature and the physicality of the performers, in three very different pieces revealing three states of man:

  • Arthurs Pita's …And Then Gone, is a provocative, amusing dance work featuring elements of voyeurism. It features “a tremendously virile energy and great humour….. a witty, tongue-in-cheek attitude and some lively moves” (Ballet Magazine).

  • David Massingham's With The Company We Keep explores raw and warring energy in a spiritual piece about the male psyche and relationships that emerge through life, some tender, some combative reflecting the fragility of our lives. Described as “a splendidly fluid and profoundly moving dance sequence…mesmerising.” (The Spectator)

  • Liam Steel's fast moving Crazy Gary dynamically combines dance with spoken text revealing the intent and insecurities of a misogynistic lewd lad on the town in a thrilling, fiercely energetic, adrenaline-fuelled‟ dance work. Described as “a pithy and absorbing slice of dance theatre” (The Sunday Telegraph), the work also contains “one of the best disco routines I've ever seen” (The Guardian).

"There is no doubt that The 5 Man Show will stay vividly in the mind of any dancegoer - and for a long time, too. The whole programme restores the long-lost faith in contemporary dance, physical theatre and dance theatre…if it is excellent dance and good theatre you are after, do not miss this." (The Spectator)
